British born but Berlin based electronic musician Stephen Warwick, aka Heatsick , has traveled a somewhat unconventional path to the dance floor. He began experimenting with tape loops around the age of 14, before forming heavy metal outfit Birds of Prey with Luke Younger (now the mastermind behind the equally wonderful Helm.) When the pair grew tired of the restrictions of the genre, they became Birds of Delay a noise/drone duo (geddit?) who released on Not Not Fun and Hospital in the later part of the last decade.
As Heatsick, Warwick has continued on his gradual path of development, pulling the project from the drone/ ambient outer reaches to recent material like his excellent 2013 Re-Engineering album which mixes his effortless, lo-fi, danceable grooves with a flair for conceptual matters that one would expect from an esteemed fine arts graduate.
In the club, Warwick has been known to create long form sets with a simple analogue set up of his trusty Casio, effects and drum machine mixing nods to disco and deep house, whilst not altogether losing his earlier penchant for noise and drone. Non club shows can be more conceptually sound, as Warwick himself puts it “I really don’t like dance music being described as purely music for the body, and if you’re trying to do anything different to that, then it’s [seen as] ‘intelligent’,” he says. “There’s nothing wrong with being smart and playful.” Quite.
