I first caught the Rhode Island rapper at The Green Door Store just under a year ago. There wasn’t many in the room that night, but Dolan quickly had us all in the palm of his hand.
Performing brilliant tracks such as 50 Ways To Bleed Your Customer and Marvin and complete with a noose around his neck, B.Dolan threw at us a perfect mix of humour, politics, emotion and spoken word in his show that night which completely blew me away.
Fortunately it wasn’t long before Dolan returned to Brighton, when he supported Scroobius Pip at Coalition later in 2011. Now I’m a big fan of Mr Pip, but that night, for me, Dolan was the highlight. Being in support, he had to work the full house a little harder to get them on side than the punters at the GDS gig earlier that year. However this took all of about 3 minutes. By the end of his set, Dolan again had the crowd under his complete spell. Finishing off with his trademark of challenging one “lucky” punter to a dance battle.
So now he’s back in Blighty touring an incredible new album, House Of Bees Vol 2, which I reckon is somehow even better than his brilliant 2010 effort, Fallen House, Sunken City. House Of Bees has many highlights but after hearing, Which Side Are You On, a track tackling homophobia and in support of Cece McDonald, I found myself playing it over and over, like I was 14 years old again, it really is a work of genius.
Not only do we have a B.Dolan to look forward to this Friday, but he will also be introducing his Church Of Love And Ruin show to lucky Brighton punters. Where we can expect to see burlesque and drag performances from Madge Of Honor and Ms Nicholle Pride and bounce artists, Vockah Redu & The Cru. All alongside 19 piece brass band, What Cheer Brigade. Let alone the excellent Sage Francis.
Who knows what this is going to look like at Coalition come Friday night, but I’m sure we’ll all have a great time finding out!
